BIONEER Project Explores the Green Potential of Alginate-Based Coatings

In a recent article published on the SINTEF blog, researchers involved in the BIONEER project highlight the promising role of alginate—a natural biopolymer extracted from brown algae—in developing bio-based, sustainable coatings that can replace fossil-derived materials in everyday products.

As part of BIONEER’s mission to promote greener industrial solutions, the team showcases how alginate’s unique properties—biodegradability, renewability, and versatility—make it a strong candidate for climate-friendly applications, including coatings, packaging, and beyond.

The article is authored by Francesca Di Bartolomeo, Susan Maleki, Alexander Wentzel, Anna Sofia Lewin, Trine Muren, and Håvard Sletta, all researchers at SINTEF working at the forefront of sustainable innovation.
